What a click really costs you: cost per signed case
A CPC is not a case. Between the click and the retainer sit your landing page, your intake team and your sign rate. The national benchmark for PI Google Ads is $442 per lead (LEXGRO, PI Cost Per Lead: 2026 Benchmarks (Jan 2026)). Scale that by each metro’s cost index, allow for the leads intake never reaches, and divide by the sign rate:
| Metro | Cost index | Est. PPC cost / lead | PPC cost / signed case | Exclusive transfer / signed case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas, TX | 2.31× | $1,021 | $12,763 | $5,984 |
| Houston, TX | 0.94× | $415 | $5,188 | $5,984 |
| Tampa, FL | 0.58× | $256 | $3,200 | $4,680 |
Assumptions: 80% of ad leads reached by intake, 10% sign rate on ad leads, 12.5% on exclusive transfers (our 2026 cost report), transfer prices from our published rate card. Change any of them in the MVA case budget calculator.
Truck accident clicks: the premium
Commercial truck cases are where the auction gets steepest. The median truck accident lawyer CPC in this data was $756, about three times the car accident median, and several metros’ bids hit Google’s $1,000 cap. Metros with too little truck bid data show a dash rather than a guess.
Why the same keyword costs 4× more in one city
- Firm density. Texas metros (Dallas, San Antonio) and San Diego top the table: many well-funded PI firms bidding on few searches.
- Search volume. High-volume markets such as Houston (10,260 searches a month) spread competition across more auctions, so prices sit near the median despite heavy spend.
- Fault rules.New Jersey, the cheapest market here, runs a choice no-fault system with a verbal threshold that keeps many minor claims out of court, which plausibly lowers what an average click is worth. Florida’s no-fault metros split both ways (Tampa low, Jacksonville high), so fault rules are one factor, not the whole story.
Methodology
For each metro we pulled Google Ads Keyword Planner metrics (via DataForSEO, English, location-targeted to the metro) for six keywords: car accident attorney, car accident lawyer near me, auto accident lawyer, car accident lawyer [city], truck accident lawyer, and personal injury lawyer. A metro's average CPC is the search-volume-weighted mean of Google's historical average CPC across the four car-accident keywords, so a high-volume term counts for more than a rare one. The top-of-page bid range is weighted the same way; Google caps the high bid at $1,000, so capped values read as 'at least'. CPCs under $10 on head terms are reporting artifacts and are excluded. Metros with fewer than three priced keywords or under 1,000 monthly searches are flagged as thin data. Only metros in markets MVA Leads serves are published.
Limitations. Keyword Planner figures are Google's estimates, not auction receipts. They describe exact head terms, while real campaigns also buy cheaper long-tail and broad-match traffic, so a firm's blended CPC usually sits below these head-term prices. Low-volume metros swing hard month to month. Treat single-metro figures as directional, and the ranking between metros as the more reliable signal.
